The European sector benchmark

The data behind the valuation

Mittelstandswert derives its own multiple ranges from public data. Listed-company multiples provide a starting point, rather than a ready-made valuation for an owner-led business.

The European sector benchmark

The starting data comes from Aswath Damodaran at NYU Stern and covers publicly traded European companies by sector. An EBITDA multiple expresses enterprise value relative to EBITDA. Differences in company size, business mix, and sector definitions mean that this benchmark requires adjustment before it can be used for an owner-led business.

Data years available: 2021 to 2026. Accessed: June 18, 2026.

Limitations of the data

Sector data cannot replace a review of the business itself. Reporting periods, earnings adjustments, and differences between business models limit comparability. The multiple range offers an initial estimate. A detailed valuation requires financial statements, contracts, earnings forecasts, and other company records.
